The Tour
East Greenland is one of the least explored places on the planet. It’s a land of glaciated peaks and unnamed ski runs that descend into iceberg-filled fjords. The terrain choices are as good as you’ll find in more popular heli ski destinations–couloirs, steeps, and spectacular descents with 360-degree views. At our pick-up points we’re occasionally visited by Greenlandic seal hunters curious about what we’re doing. Sometimes we cross paths with polar bears. Heli skiing here is a true bucket list adventure for those skiers who have skied everywhere else.
The Place
Tasiilaq – Our Heli Ski Base
From Reykjavik, we fly into Kulusuk, and are then transported by Air Greenland helicopter to the town of Tasiilaq, our base for the week. Tasiilaq has a population of around 2,000 Greenlandic people and is only accessible by sea or air. Greenlandic culture is infused in nearly every part of our trip, from the museum-like Angmagssalik Hotel and its stunning views over the harbour, to village visits and traditional food that may include whale, seal, polar bear and caribou (vegetarian options available).
The Angmagssalik Region offers everything we could want for a week of adventure heli skiing. Mountains tower over the fjords creating a spectacle like nowhere else. Our helicopters fly over the sea so often here that regulations require floats for water landings. We discover new terrain and make first descents on every trip.
The Weather
Greenland Skiing Conditions
Deep powder skiing is possible until the end of March and often beyond. Spring weather in East Greenland is generally dominated by high pressure systems with blue skies, light wind and temperatures ranging from -10C to -3C, but colder temps and big snow storms are still common.
Late spring sees us skiing corn snow but still hunting down stashes of powder up high on north-facing slopes. The coastal snowpack here is deep and typically well-settled with good stability.
On down days (which average about one day per week, the same as most heli ski destinations) we organize traditional dog sledding or fishing excursions with Greenlandic guides. These can often be as exciting as the skiing.
